Lockdown

Fullscreen Lockdown the Moment the Exam Starts

Before the first question appears, respondents see a secure-assessment gate that lists exactly which rules apply — fullscreen, tab switching, copy/paste, right-click. They enter fullscreen to begin. Mobile devices are blocked at the gate; proctored exams belong on a desktop where you can actually enforce the rules.

Catch the Behaviors That Matter, Auto-Submit When They Cross a Line

Set hard thresholds for the two violations that end an exam — fullscreen exits and tab switches. Set your own limits (defaults are 3 and 5). When a respondent crosses the threshold, the form auto-submits and a permanent overlay locks the screen. Copy, paste, and right-click attempts are blocked outright and counted, so you see exactly what was tried — without ending the exam over a stray Ctrl+C.

Timers

Per-Page Timers Most Quiz Tools Don't Have

Most platforms only let you cap the whole form. FormBuilder also limits each page. Give respondents three minutes for the math section, five for the essay — when the page timer hits zero, the form moves on automatically. Timers survive page reloads via secure cookies. Respondents can't game the timer by refreshing the browser.

Randomization

A Different Exam for Every Respondent

Toggle question randomization and answer-option randomization independently. Every respondent sees the questions in a different order and the answer choices in a different order. Side-by-side cheating gets a lot harder when nobody's exam looks the same.

Scoring

Automatic Scoring with a Pass Threshold You Control

Set a correct answer and a point value on every quiz question. Submissions are scored the moment they're sent — total points, percentage, and a pass/fail status compared against your threshold. Mixed-weight questions are supported: a 10-point essay can sit next to a 1-point multiple choice.

Every Response Tells You Exactly What Happened

Open any submitted exam and the violation badge tells you the story at a glance: green for clean, yellow for minor issues, red for serious problems. See counts for every restriction, time-away in seconds, page-by-page timing, and a clear auto-submitted flag when thresholds were exceeded. No reviewing video — the data is already there.

Built for Assessments That Need to Hold Up

From certification bodies to corporate training teams — when the result of the test actually matters, the security around it has to match.

Professional Certification

Issue industry certifications with timed exams, fullscreen lockdown, and pass/fail thresholds. Every attempt has a full audit trail of violations.

Academic & Remote Exams

Run midterms, finals, and entrance tests remotely. Per-page timers keep pace, randomization prevents copying, and the violation report gives instructors hard evidence.

Compliance Training

Mandate completion of regulatory training with measurable proof. Track exactly who passed, when, and whether they tried to circumvent the rules.

Hiring & Skill Tests

Screen candidates with timed technical tests. Fullscreen lockdown and tab-switch monitoring keep early-round assessments honest without webcam overhead.

Language Proficiency

Time each section independently — reading, writing, listening — and randomize prompts. Auto-score multiple choice and review open answers later.

Bar & Board Prep

Replicate exam conditions for practice tests — strict timers, no copy/paste, no peeking. Get violation reports back so students see where they slipped.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is exam mode in FormBuilder?
Exam mode turns a form into a proctored assessment. It enforces fullscreen, blocks tab-switching and copy/paste, optionally randomizes questions and answers, runs per-page and total-form timers, and produces a violation report on every submission. It works alongside quiz mode for automatic scoring.
How does proctoring work without a webcam?
FormBuilder uses behavioral signals, not video. The form detects fullscreen exits, tab and window switches, copy/paste attempts, and right-click attempts directly in the browser. Respondents that try to leave the exam screen are warned, then auto-submitted when they cross the thresholds you set. Every action is logged for the examiner.
Does it work on mobile?
No — and that's intentional. Mobile browsers can't enforce true fullscreen the way desktops can, and behavioral signals are less reliable on touch devices. The pre-exam gate detects mobile and prompts the respondent to switch to a desktop. If you need an unproctored mobile assessment, use a regular form without exam mode.
Can I set a time limit for the whole exam, or just per page?
Both, independently. The total-form countdown caps how long the whole exam stays open. Each page can also have its own timer — useful when you want to budget time across sections (e.g., 15 minutes for reading, 30 for writing). Timers survive browser reloads via secure cookies, so respondents can't reset the clock.
What happens when a respondent breaks the rules?
It depends on the rule. Tab switches and fullscreen exits count toward your threshold (defaults are 5 and 3) — at the threshold, the exam auto-submits and a permanent overlay locks the screen. Copy/paste and right-click are blocked outright and logged, but don't end the exam — examiners get to see what was tried without losing a clean submission to a misclick.
How do I score the exam?
Set a correct answer and a point value on each quiz question. After submission, FormBuilder calculates total points, percentage, and pass/fail status against your threshold. Open the response in your dashboard and you'll see the score next to the violation badge — no manual grading for objective questions.
Can I see exactly what a respondent did during the exam?
Yes. Every submission shows a violation badge color-coded by severity (green / yellow / red), counts for every restriction with their thresholds, total time away in seconds, and per-page time spent versus the page limit. Auto-submitted exams are flagged in red so you can spot them at a glance.
What's the difference between exam mode and quiz mode?
Quiz mode adds scoring, pass/fail thresholds, and results pages — good for graded quizzes, learning checks, and lead-gen quizzes (see the online quiz maker). Exam mode adds everything in quiz mode plus the lockdown layer: fullscreen, anti-cheat, timers, randomization, and violation reports. Use exam mode when the integrity of the result matters.
